Aims

CGS Contractors seeks to develop an ethos of environmental responsibility in its entire staff as well as in the management of its sites. This is based on recognition of the need to contribute at local, regional, national and global levels to the sustainable use of natural resources and be cost effective wherever possible.

  • CGS Contractors has the strict aim to comply all legal and other relevant requirements that are currently in place.
  • The establishment and maintenance of management structures within our operating companies and divisions with specific responsibility for the implementation of environ-mental policy
  • Established targets to measure the developments in place to reduce the companies energy use, water use and waste production that our company currently generates.
  • Regular management reviews of the latest content and the implementation of the environmental policy with the objective of achieving continuous improvement in performance of best practice training and awareness.
  • The introduction of environmental criteria to assess the commitment to sustainable procurement of our supply chain assessing the most sustainable materials viable for the job.

Waste

CGS Contractors will ensure that all waste materials generated on site as a result of their activities (unless authorised to be retained on Site) are removed in accordance with the Duty of Care.

This may involve any of the following activities:

  • Removal of General waste by a licensed carrier I contractor and retaining a Waste Transfer Note.
  • Removal of hazardous waste by a licensed carrier I contractor and retaining a Consignment Note.
  • The documentation of the waste removed from sites, so the quantities, type and location of the waste is monitored at all times.
  • All contractors must ensure that where feasible, environmentally superior resources are used and that resource conservation is considered.

Nuisance

CGS Contractors will ensure where feasible, activities likely to create an environmental nuisance are avoided.

This may involve any of the following activities:

  • Prevention of the release of nuisance dust.
  • Prevention of the generation of excessive noise.
  • Prevention of the generation of litter/visual nuisance.
  • Prevention of the generation of odour.
  • Prevention of any other form of nuisance.

General

CGS Contractors will ensure where feasible, all activities that may be detrimental to the environment are carried out in a controlled manner to minimize the detrimental impacts.

This may involve any of the following activities:

  • Compliance with all environmentally related regulations.
  • Preservation of flora and fauna with the protection of these habitats/species being at the utmost importance to CGS Contractors.
  • Minimisation of accidents and emergencies by assessing the risks and putting measures in place to prevent these.

Atmospheric Emissions

CGS Contractors will ensure that atmospheric emissions are kept to a minimum.

This may involve any of the following activities:

  • Minimising solvent and chemical evaporation by ensuring that containers are kept sealed when not in direct use.
  • Minimising the generation of dust, or screening dust-releasing operations, to prevent release into the internal and external atmosphere.
  • Ensuring that spillages of evaporative solvents and chemicals are cleaned up in line with- best practice emergency procedures.
  • Where possible, using chemicals and materials which are less damaging to the atmosphere.
  • Avoiding the burning of waste materials on site.
  • Preventing unnecessary idling and operation of vehicles and atmospheric polluting equipment.
  • Prevention of any other unnecessary atmospheric polluting activity.

Water Contamination

CGS Contractors will ensure that contamination of watercourses, including surface and foul water systems, does not occur.

This may involve any of the following activities:

  • Preventing contaminating spillages from entering drainage systems directly or via the ground.
  • Ensuring that the risk of spillage of contaminating substances is minimized through effective controls and containment.
  • Ensuring that spillages of water contaminating polluting materials are cleaned up in line with Groundwork emergency spillage procedure.
  • Preventing the deliberate discharge of polluting substances into drains or the ground.
  • Prevention of any other unnecessary water polluting activity, including soil/silt run-off.

Land Contamination

CGS Contractors will ensure that contamination of land does not occur.

This may involve any of the following activities:

  • Preventing contaminating spillages from entering the ground.
  • Ensuring that the risk of spillage of ground contaminating substances is Implementation

The Company will:

  • Promote best practice on environmental issues.
  • Develop an environmental strategy for the CGS Contractors that aims constantly improving our environmental policy.
  • Identify and build on good housekeeping practice.
  • Encourage cost-effective utilisation of resources through the setting of objectives and targets.
  • Encourage the development of competence for those with environmental responsibilities.

This Policy will be reviewed annually.

The environmental policy is authorised by owner T.N. McFadden as an up to date requirement for the employees in the business to maintain. It ensures that the company can monitor the Sustainability of the works provided and allows a clear guidance for employees to follow. This shows the environmental ethos that CGS contractors upholds and a means of protecting all aspects of the environment.
